Every guitarist has said “this pick sounds different” at some point, and almost none of them can tell you why. That’s the gap we’re here to close. There are really three variables doing all the work — bevel angle, tip radius, and material density — and once you isolate them, the “vibes-based” pick-shopping experience starts to make a lot more sense.

Tip radius: the sharpness dial

The Jazz III’s tip is deliberately tighter than a standard pick’s, and that radius is doing more work than people give it credit for. A tighter tip radius means less pick surface actually touches the string at the moment of contact — which produces a brighter, more articulate attack, because you’re exciting the string with something closer to a point than a blade.

Signature variants make this explicit: Eric Johnson’s version rounds the tip out deliberately, trading some of that articulation for a warmer, smoother output — proof that tip radius alone can move a pick’s whole personality without touching the material or the shape around it.

Bevel: how the edge meets the string

A beveled edge — where the tip is polished down at an angle rather than left as a hard perpendicular edge — changes how smoothly the pick glides off the string during release. Petrucci’s signature Jazz III leans on this directly: it adds a polished bevel specifically so the pick can glide across the strings with less resistance, which softens the attack slightly compared to an unbeveled tip at the same sharpness.

The tradeoff is real: less resistance means less “grab,” which is exactly why some players deliberately avoid beveled tips for aggressive picking — they want the friction.

Material density: the actual sound, not just the feel

This is the one people argue about the most, and for good reason — it’s the least intuitive variable. Denser, stiffer materials like Ultex produce a brighter, more present tone with a sharper attack, because a stiffer pick flexes less on contact, transferring more of the picking energy directly into the string instead of absorbing it into the pick itself. Softer materials — nylon, and especially Delrin/Tortex blends — flex slightly more, which rounds off some of that top-end energy and produces the warmer, mellower tone associated with those variants.

Putting the three together

None of these variables acts alone — they compound. A sharp tip radius with no bevel and a stiff material (think: unbeveled Ultex) is about as bright and aggressive as this pick shape gets. Round the tip, add a bevel, and switch to a softer material, and you’ve basically built the Eric Johnson approach — the same silhouette, tuned for warmth instead of edge.

That’s the actual mechanism behind “this pick just sounds different” — it’s never one thing. It’s always these three variables, stacked.
